News to Waste Incineration Plants

Waste Incineration Plant Mainz Line 3

Process Description:

  • Between 2001 and 2003, the two Waste Incineration Plants according to System MARTIN were built. The waste incineration disposes wastes out of the area of the cities of Mainz and Bingen and surroundings.
The thermal energy, which is released by the waste incineration, is transformed in 4-pass vertical steam generators in live steam, with which electricity is generated in downstream arranged steam turbo sets.
  • For capacity increase, for electricity generation and for the energetically optimal tie-in in the 400 MW combined gas tubine- and steam turbine power plant (GuD-power plant), owned by Kraftwerke Mainz-Wiesbaden AG, the third waste incineration line, the extraction-condensing-steam turbo set as well as the interconnecting piping between the waste incineration plant and the gas- and steam turbine power plant were built.
  • With that a part of the live steam, which is generated in the waste incineration plant, is fed into the adjacent gas turbine- and steam turbine power plant and there the steam is superheated into the reheater to 550 °C and consequently is transferred to electricity in a high efficient manner. This combination and interaction of plants was implemented the first time in Germany.
In a new steam turbo set with direct river water cooling and district heating extraction, a further efficient use of the live steam, generated in the waste incineration plant, takes place.
  • The Waste Incineration CHP Plant Mainz is in relation to the energetic use of the waste for electricity-, process steam- and district heating-generation to be considered as a bench-mark solution.

Technical Main Data:

  • Nominal Live Steam Massflow of all 3 Waste Incineration Lines = 155 t/h
Nominal Lve Steam Massflow to Steam Turbine = 90 t/h
Nominal Live Steam Massflow to GT- & ST Power Plant = 95 t/h
Nominal Electrical Power Output Steam Turbo Set = 20.7 MW
    Condensate-Preheating = 5.1 MW
    District Heating Extration = 2-stage

Project Scope:

  • Design, Engineering, Planning and Delivery of 3. Waste Incineration Line by extension of the existing building, with waste receiving, waste incinerator according to System MARTIN, thermal waste treatment (reverse acting grate), steam generation and flue gas cleaning
  • Tie-in of the live steam pipe of the waste incineration plant into the pipeline to the gas turbine- and steam turbine power plant, where the live steam is reheated and subsequently fed to the steam turbine to generate electricity.
  • Tie-in of the existing Energy Part and the waste incineration plant internal steam consumption supply.
  • Design, Engineering, Planning and Delivery of the Extraction-condensing steam turbo set with new steam turbine hall, direct cooled with the river water from the Rhein. In addition an extraction steam system and a district heating extraction belongs to the project scope.
The extraction steam supplies the steam consumption of the waste incineration lines.
In addition the extraction steam and the bleed steam supplies district heating over a 2-stage district heating extraction for the city of Mainz.
Between the building of the waste incineration lines and the steam turbine hall, a pipe rack for steam-, condensate- and auxiliary pipelines as well as for cabling was built.
  • Design, Engineering, Planning and Delivery of the Cooling water intake structure for the river water intake, water cleaning system, pumps with flaps and the cooling water outfall.
For the well functioning discharge of the cooling water into the river, a new cooling water syphon pit was built.
